Piliot Study for the Development of a Patient Reported Outcome Measure (PROM) for Child with Musculoskeletal Impairements in Malawi

Institution: London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine
Investigator: Dr Yasmene Alavi, Professor Chris Lavy
Stream: Clinical Fellowship
Topic: General Orthopaedic
Status: Live

Over the last 15 years a number of instruments for the measurement of health related quality of life in children with orthopaedic conditions or musculoskeletal impairment (MSI) have been developed and validated in high income countries. None of these has, however, been found to be appropriate in low income developing countries.

The senior investigator has had experience of setting up orthopaedic hospitals and research units in Malawi and Zambia where surgical and other inventions are made in the lives of thousands of children each year. The stakeholders in such programmes currently have no validated methods of assessment as to the effectiveness or cost effectiveness of such interventions in terms of patient reported outcomes. We plan to develop such an instrument. The work will be done in Malawi in anticipation that it will be adapted for use in other low income countries.
