3-D Preoperative Planning System

Institution: Imperial College London
Investigators: Dr Vijay kannan, Professor Justin Cobb
Stream: Clinical Fellowship
Topic: Design/Navigation (Hip)
Status: Completed

3-D Preoperative Planning System Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA) with an uncemented hydroxyapatite coated device is now established as a safe and reliable way of obtaining excellent long-term successful function. The acetabulum remains a cause for some concern most particularly in respect of its orientation and the relationship between angulation and wear leading to early failure. Our group has taken the view that a definite plan beforehand has distinct advantages when measuring efficacy of different interventions.

The project aimed to develop planning software that would enable surgeons to perform virtual hip arthroplasty on screen. It has been trialled on a group of surgical trainees, who were able to use its functions. The software has been sent to the Foundation in a useable format on any pc.
