Quantification of the Biomechanics of the Arthroplasty and their Relationship to Functional Outcome

Institution: Imperial College London
Investigators: Dr Vijay kannan, Professor Justin Cobb
Stream: Clinical Fellowship
Topic: Biomechanics (Hip)
Status: Completed

The previous work by the research has shown that there is a relationship between acetabular inclination and penetration of femoral head into the acetabular liner, whether by wear or creep.

From work performed by Mr Alister Hart, we also have shown that there is a relationship between metal ion levels in the blood and acetabular inclination. The impact of error in acetabular surgery is therefore as or more important than error in femoral surgery in hip arthroplasty.

We developed a software and hardware to measure the acetabular inclination at time of surgery. We can now measure the cup inclination and anteversion prior to implantation. This is now ready for clinical trial.
