This study will determine whether it is possible to use a bisphosphonate and/or silicon or strontium to enhance bone formation around ceramic-coated implant specifically with the HA coating used in Furlong HAC hip replacement.
We will determine whether it is possible to decrease the time taken to achieve implant fixation. The ability to promote bone formation and bone apposition to the implant in cases where there is increased bone turnover as in osteopenia will be assessed.
The action of biphosphonates, silicon and strontium released from HA coating on osteoclasts, marrow stromal cells and osteoblasts will be determined to assess how these agents are modifying the response of bone to the implant.
