Navigated Hip Arthroplasty: Image-free or CT Based?

Institution: Imperial College London
Investigators: Dr Vijay Kannan, Professor Justin Cobb
Stream: PhD
Topic: Lower Limbs/Navigation (Hip)
Status: Live

Professor Cobb's current research activities at Imperial College are centred around osteoarthritis of the hip and knee, its causes and interventions to treat it. His group have core skills in 3-dimensional imaging based on CT acquired dataset, and the use of these images to enable precise planning and performance of early interventions to prevent progression of osteoarthritis.

Publication in the fields of hip arthroplasty in the recent past have highlighted the relationship between acetabular angulation and wear, and the long term success of uncemented HA coated hip arthroplasty. In the knee, published work has shown the impact of accuracy on outcome in unicompartmental knee arthroplasty.

His students are working on both hip and knee joints at present in the following areas:
  • developing frames of reference about the hip and knee to enable accurate surgery;
  • developing discriminant functional scores that will enable accurate assessment of outcome;
  • reducing the dose of radiation needed for 3-dimensional virtual surgery;
  • developing technologies to improve accuracy of surgery using both passive navigation systems and active robotic systems;
  • the use of computerised systems to enable surgical skills to be acquired safely and fast.
